'At approx 4:42 into the song there is a Welsh man talking about 'beer allowances' he mentions a Welsh village called 'EBBW VALE.' Paul Ketley writes:
The Welsh bloke, (from Ebbw Vale), is somebody talking about moving to Middlesbrough either during or post WWII.
During that time people migrated to areas of the UK to work in heavy industry. This is particularly true of Middlesbrough (North East England), which had and still has large imposing chemical factories.
The Beer bit, well at the time Middlesbrough beer was rated as the best in the world - probably (sorry Denmark). The beer was so good that the locals demanded that they have access to it and special rationing stamps were included to restore the supply. This did not happen in the rest of the UK. If you have tasted crap from London (Courage) or Burton (Bass) you'll know why.
The beer is probably Camerons though there have been that many buy-outs and post-buy-outs that it could be Castle Eden or one that I don't know.
If you get the chance try it. Plus look out for Black Sheep Brewery bottles such as "Skull Crusher" or "Riggwelter". Those are brewed in Masham, North Yorkshire.
Significance - maybe LX had a few jars or picked up some stuff from Tesco's. Then again, documentaries on the reminiscences of pensioners are always good for a laugh and decent sample material.
Paul Moller writes:
I think the guy is comparing the fact that they had a milk allowance as miners during the war in Wales but up in Middlesborough they had a beer allowance. The nearest thing these days is a brew by Tetley called Imperial, a dark, strong bitter advertised as Teesides favorite brew and only available in this form in a small area around Teeside. If you drink it in Leeds where it's brewed it is apparently totally different to the stuff we get up here, I am in Whitby, North Yorkshire by the way and a massive Orb fan for 10 years now.
also contains a piano loop from Eno/Wobble`s Spinner.
